Dear Member,ISQua Past Bulletin Headers

The ISQua Bulletin has come a long way from its original incarnation back in 1998.  We hope you like our new look as much as we do!

We've started 2013 at a run with two webinars from internationally respected speakers already held and another due later this month. Further information on these can be found under Education and Fellowship.

ISQua's first African regional meeting was held in Accra, Ghana on 4th and 5th February.  This meeting, which was held in collaboration with University Research Co., LLC Quality & Performance Institute, has been widely praised both nationally and internationally.  You can read more about it and the future outcomes below.

Report from the Acting CEO

My report to the February meeting of the ISQua Board covered 23 points. These ranged from those you would expect to see in any CEO Board report such as finances (looking good), membership (tracking well for January), Workplan 2012 (ahead on some items, on target with most and trailing on one or two), Workplan 2013 (first draft ready) and others that are not so routine.

In this latter category I will talk about some interesting developments with the ISQua Fellowship, Low and Middle Income Country initiatives and where our Conference might be heading over the coming years.

Getting to know ISQua's new Deputy CEO
by Peter Carter

Triona Fortune, ISQua Deputy CEO
Triona Fortune, ISQua Deputy CEO
As I write this brief treatise on Triona Fortune, the lady in question has just arrived home from Ghana as a member of an ISQua team conducting a Regional Meeting. The meeting was two days with a preceding site visit to the Fives Alive Project of two days. The planning for the meeting however, spread over the best part of eighteen months and Triona as lead has been in the thick of it! (Of course, being the team player she is Triona, gives due credit to Eadin Murphy, ISQua’s Event Manager who was Triona’s right hand in this endeavour).

Hugh Macleod, CEO of CPSI

In 2012, Hugh Macleod, CEO of Canadian Patient Safety Institute, created an essay for the Canadian Healthcare Publisher Longwoods that borrowed one of Charles Dickens’ ghosts from A Christmas Carol and set it loose upon a modern realm. He titled it: “The Ghost of Healthcare Despair”. This essay was so well received it inspired Longwoods to invite Hugh to create a series of “Healthcare Ghost Busting Essays”.

Compassion in Healthcare

Recently I had call to stop and think about what compassion in healthcare really means. The Irish Society for Quality and Safety in Healthcare has never asked patients about compassion in its surveys about patient experience directly, but as I thought about it, I thought how the ISQSH ask lots of questions that centre on the whole concept of compassion and what it means to me.
