Patient empowerment: for better quality, more sustainable health services globally
The All Party Parliamentary Group on Global Health (UK)

The result of a partnership by the All Party Parliamentary Groups on Global Health; HIV/AIDs; Population, Development and Reproductive Health; Global Tuberculosis; and Patient and Public Involvement in Health and Social Care in the UK, this report takes a global perspective on how to empower patients to play a more active role in their care.

Drawing lessons from over 100 innovative case studies submitted to the review, it outlines how much the UK has to learn from high, middle and low income countries – and how these lessons should be applied.

One Person One Team One System
One Person supported by people acting as One Team from organisations behaving as One System

In March 2014, Sir John Oldham’s Independent Commission on Whole Person Care published its report ‘One person, one team, one system’. The Oldham Commission argues for a radical new approach over 2015-2020 to rework the health and social care system to meet the changing needs of the population. Behaviours across the system will have to change fundamentally, with the needs of one person being addressed by health and social care staff acting as one team from organisations behaving as one system.

Navigating Safety, Necessary Compromises and Trade-offs-Theory and Practice
Rene Amalberti

Managing safety in a professional environment requires constant negotiation with other competitive dimensions of risk management (finances, market and political drivers, manpower and social crisis). This is obvious, although generally not said in safety manuals.

The book provides a unique vision of how to best find these compromises, starting with lessons learnt from natural risk management by individuals, then applying them to the craftsman industry, complex industrial systems (civil aviation, nuclear energy) and public services (like transportation and medicine).

Global Health Law
Lawrence O. Gostin

The international community has made great progress in improving global health. But staggering health inequalities between rich and poor still remain, raising fundamental questions of social justice. In a book that systematically defines the burgeoning field of global health law, Lawrence Gostin drives home the need for effective global governance for health and offers a blueprint for reform, based on the principle that the opportunity to live a healthy life is a basic human right.

International Accreditation Programme (IAP) Update
Accreditation Council Meeting - Brisbane - 5th and 6th May 2014
byTriona Fortune, ISQua Deputy CEO

Triona with her new friend!
Triona with her new friend!

Thank-you to Steve Clark, Group CEO, AGPAL for hosting ISQua’s Accreditation Council (AC) in Brisbane. It’s always a learning and motivational experience when 17 of the leaders in healthcare accreditation sit around the same table. We don’t always agree but healthy debate always creates new ideas, for example consistent use of terminology around external evaluation, accreditation, regulation etc. How to ensure the challenges that an increasing elderly population will put on external evaluation models.

LESSONS LEARNED……MEMOIRS OF A PUBLIC HEALTH PRACTITIONER
byEmmanuel Aiyenigba

Emmanuel Aiyenigba, ISQua Associate Fellow
Emmanuel Aiyenigba, ISQua Associate Fellow

What or who is an ISQua-empowered Public Health Practitioner? Different people would have different definition for this entity but one of my many is: an individual who has been led through the process of self-discovery to appreciate his person, his work, worth and his relevance to his world. Through knowledge sharing, mentoring, thought-provoking forum that make a professional question the status quo, this individual is gently but deliberately modelled into an expert of improvement science. He is aware of, but not limited by, cultural limitations or socio-economic constraints.
