Fellowship Update

The number of Fellowship Programme participants has reached 110 with 31 countries represented in the Programme. There have been quite a few sign ups from Australia and Canada that has positioned these countries, respectively, on top of the table, closely followed by Nigeria in third place.

I had the opportunity to attend the ICCA Sector Destination Marketing International Client/Supplier Business Workshop in Berlin, Germany on behalf of ISQua. ISQua was invited to attend the workshop  as a client by Marketing Edinburgh. The workshop was organised by the ICCA in conjunction with visitBerlin Convention Bureau. There were 17 convention bureaux attending this year’s workshop and along with 17 clients, this was the biggest ICCA Client/Supplier Business workshop that the ICCA had held to date.

On 14 May 2014, the Health Foundation hosted a workshop to discuss building capability for improving safety.

The event was developed in collaboration with NHS Improving Quality and was attended by leaders from across the NHS. The aim was to produce a useful overview of what capability for safety improvement organisations need, and the best ways to go about developing this capability.

The quality and safety of healthcare continues to be a topic of intense public and policy concern in many countries. In the UK, in the wake of a much-publicised hospital scandal, national attention has focused increasingly on the quality of patient experience, and questions about organisational cultures which seem to tolerate visibly poor care.

In part in response to such issues, we established Patient Opinion as a non-profit social enterprise in 2005. We wanted to explore whether the new possibilities of online communication could be used to enable patients and carers to become more active participants in encouraging safe, high quality care. After all, isn’t the person with the strongest interest in seeing good care the patient themselves?

Professor Cliff Hughes, AO, the CEO of the Clinical Excellence Commission, was recently conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) by the University of New South Wales.

A DSc degree is the highest academic award UNSW confers – given only a few times a year, for a lifetime dedicated to research.

His acceptance speech was aimed at engaging the next generation of doctors and his memories of people who have helped shape his life….

The Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) recently announced the appointment of its new Chief Executive, Dr Christine Dennis.                                              

“I am delighted to announce Dr Christine Dennis has been appointed by the Board of ACHS and will commence on  21 July,  2014,” said ACHS President, Adjunct Associate Professor Karen Linegar.  “Christine has an extensive background in safety and quality and has worked as a senior executive in numerous roles, most recently as Acting CEO Northern Territory Health.
